“I Won’t Make the Same Mistakes as My Parents.”
ALL OF US feel certain we know better than to follow our parents’ examples. For a long time, we watched our parents carefully, so we reason that we know enough not to fall into the same traps they did. And yet we often do just that. Three factors predetermine this likelihood:
1. We inherit our parents’ DNA.
2. We are more familiar with their behaviors than most anyone else’s.
3. If they did a good job raising us, we want to emulate the things they did right.
